Portland Urban Maternity Lifestyle Photography Session & Location Feature
Ever wonder where to have your maternity photography session in the Portland Oregon area?
There are a lot of options, including parks, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon coast, Cathedral Park, and your own home. But have you ever considered having an urban maternity session?
I find that having a convenient and safe location, close to parking, with a restroom, and a short distance between locations to be of high importance for maternity photo sessions.
I recently photographed this lovely family, who are expecting twins, at a Portland urban location that is now one of my new favorite photo spots!

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT
This location has lots of safe space for little ones to explore and run while not being too close to the street.
URBAN BUILDINGS PROVIDE EVEN LIGHT AND SHADE, PERFECT FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
This session was shot on a fall morning, and there was the perfect amount of shade and light to create variety, as well as many spots for families to sit and rest, which also gives lots of opportunities for different configurations in the photos.
A PLACE TO SIT IS IMPORTANT AT MATERNITY SESSIONS
These stairs provide a nice linear but neutral backdrop for sitting and standing images. Kids can also use the stairs to jump, and pose for their own photos. I find that kids LOVE to sit in the middle of a set of stairs, and then to laugh and smile while looking up into my camera. And bonus, there is a public restroom right behind the coffeeshop.
Right around the corner we have a great brick wall, as well as a city sidewalk and trees! A very common urban street scene for Portland.
SESSION GROUPINGS
At this session it was a priority to photograph their daughter alone with both parent before the little babies arrive, and this brick wall provided some great color and texture when paired with the Moto jackets that they were wearing. I go into each session with a shot list specific to each unique family .

LOTS OF BACKDROP OPTIONS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY
An amazing benefit of urban sessions is that we have so many different backdrop options around every corner. I love how this grey wall really played up the expectant Mom’s outfit selection. So much that I couldn't choose between the two poses or edits in the next shot!
And, a bonus is after your session you can enjoy an amazing beverage at Good Coffee while hanging out on their outdoor patio.
