Seasonal Considerations

George Rogers Park is beautiful in all seasons. What changes is the foliage, how busy the park is, and where the light is coming from.

Winter: During the winter when we have more cloud cover we have lots of flexibility on session time. You would probably want to avoid going in the water during the colder winter months, but there is tons of evergreen foliage for beautiful photos in winter.

Spring: George Rogers Park has some beautiful spring flowering trees and bushes and a warm glow during the spring months. Business at the park varies with the weather, and it’s always less busy during the week.

Summer: During the peak of summer on the weekends and evenings the park can get quite busy with families doing water sports and hanging out on the river, but we can work around those times to plan the perfect session for you and your family. I also will walk a bit off the beaten path to find great natural backdrops without busy park visitors.

Fall: There are beautiful fall trees with orange and yellow hues for photos. The park itself is less busy in fall but you will see many photographers there for photo sessions.

Lots of Variety

George Rogers Park has a large grassy area, perfect for running around under. It also has a very old ‘iron furnace’ that has great stone facades and rich color with interesting architectural shapes and details. There is also a beautiful trellis close to the grassy area that provides a great spot to sit while surrounded by greenery (season and drought dependent). In addition to the iron furnace and grassy area, there are hiking trails, big rocks surrounded by trees, a great bridge which depending on the season can yield interesting compositions, a stream, and the beach on the willamette river.

Its Fun, and kids want to explore the area

Due to all of the variety I mentioned above, kids enjoy walking around the park, and seeing all of the different spots. They will get to throw rocks in the stream, do a bit of hiking, can run free, and even see some little baby ducks and geese. It’s a memorable experience for the kids, and also leads to a fun photo taking experience as well as great in the moment photos of your family.

Convenience

The parking area is not a far walk to all of the great locations. So, there’s no need to do a long hike to get to the location. There area some stairs to traverse down to the beach, but that area is also accessible via a ramp as well.

A True PNW location

I love that we really get the best of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer here in this location. Lots of evergreen trees, beach, and beautiful water. What more can you ask for? It’s the perfect backdrop for fun connected moments with your people.

Tips about having a photo session at George Rogers Park:

  • Your kids will probably get wet. Come prepared for sand, climbing rocks, and even some jumping in the river. Take this into account when planning outfits and shoes for your session.

  • Consider bringing towels/extra shoes or clothes for the ride home due to the water and sand at the park.

  • There are restrooms available, and they are located by the Iron Furnace. So you’ll definitely want to use the restroom before the session, or before we head down to the beach.

  • If you have very young children who may run full stop into the river, perhaps we should consider another location for your family photo session, as water safety is of high priority. This is something we can discuss while planning your session.
