The Pearl District
If your family loves exploring Portland neighborhoods, grabbing coffee (and / or ice cream), visiting bookstores, and wandering city streets, the Pearl District may be the perfect location for your family photo session. My daughters and I have spent countless hours here exploring Powell’s Books, checking out cafes, and window shopping.
The Pearl is one of my favorite urban locations because it offers so much variety within just a few blocks. During a single session we can incorporate colorful city streets, modern architecture, public art, brick buildings, greenery, and iconic Portland landmarks. It feels distinctly Portland while still providing a clean, modern backdrop for family photos.
One of my favorite things about photographing in the Pearl is that no two sessions are ever exactly the same. The neighborhood is constantly changing, which means we're always discovering new colors, textures, murals, storefronts, and little pockets of inspiration along the way. The experience feels more like exploring the city together than stopping at a single photo spot.

The Pearl is often one of my first recommendations for most families, particularly families with older kids and teens. There is always something to discover, which helps keep everyone engaged and makes the session feel more like an adventure than a photo session.

Slabtown
Located between the Pearl District and Nob Hill, Slabtown is one of my favorite urban neighborhoods for family photo sessions. It offers many of the things people love about city sessions, interesting architecture, colorful walls, local businesses, and great energy, while feeling a little quieter and more relaxed than some of Portland's busier neighborhoods.
During a single session we can incorporate modern buildings, historic brick architecture, murals, greenery, wide sidewalks, and fun neighborhood details that make the photos feel distinctly Portland. It has a modern urban feel without feeling overly busy or crowded.
For families with active kids, Slabtown also provides plenty of room for safe movement. Whether we're walking, scootering, or simply wandering from one block to the next, the Slabtown neighborhood naturally lends itself to playful, candid moments and a gallery full of variety.

Eastbank Esplanade + OMSI
When looking for a location that feels unmistakably Portland, the Eastbank Esplanade is one of my favorite recommendations. This area combines city views, river access, iconic bridges, colorful urban elements, and pockets of greenery, all within a relatively small area that's easy to navigate. It’s even the location where I photographed my extended family the last time they visited!
I absolutely love the unique Portland views and little pockets of inspiration for backdrops here. During a single session we can photograph along the Willamette river, incorporate Portland's skyline and bridges, explore colorful walls and public art, and even find beautiful foliage depending on the season. This results in a gallery that feels diverse and full of personality.
Unlike some urban locations, the Eastbank Esplanade also gives kids room to move although they need to be really good listeners to stay safe. We can walk, explore, head down to the river, and let kids be kids while still creating photos that showcase the energy and character of Portland.

Located along the west side of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Tom McCall Waterfront Park offers another unique view of Portland along the river. With waterfront pathways, bridge views, open natural spaces, and a backdrop of Portland's skyline, Tom McCall waterfront park is a wonderful option for families who want their photos to feel connected to the city.
One of the things I enjoy about this location is the variety of experiences available throughout the year. In the spring, the cherry blossoms create a beautiful display of color along the waterfront. During the summer, the fountains and open spaces bring lots of energy and movement. Throughout the year, the river and bridge views provide a distinctly Portland backdrop for family photos.
Because of its central location, Tom McCall Waterfront Park also pairs well with a family outing downtown. Whether you're exploring the city, enjoying dinner nearby, or spending the day along the waterfront, it can be a fun way to incorporate some of your favorite Portland activities into your session.

Portland Street Art & Murals
Portland is famous for being independent and artistic which provides us with an incredible amount of color and unique artistic backdrops throughout the city. From large-scale murals to painted walls, public art installations, and unexpected pops of color, Portland offers countless opportunities to create vibrant and playful family photos. You will often catch my daughter and I planning mini photo sessions when we find new murals.
Unlike many of the locations in this guide, street art isn't limited to one neighborhood. Some of my favorite murals and colorful walls are scattered throughout the four quadrants of Portland, and I'm constantly keeping an eye out for new artwork, fresh paint, and interesting urban backdrops as the city evolves. Sometimes we may build an entire session around a specific mural, while other times we incorporate a colorful wall into a larger urban adventure through a neighborhood like the Pearl District, Slabtown, or the Eastbank Esplanade.
I especially love incorporating street art into sessions with older kids and teens. The color, energy, and modern feel help create photos that feel fun, creative, and a little different from a traditional park setting.

Tweens and teens

My Favorite Nature Inspired PDX Family Photo Locations
Cathedral Park & St Johns Bridge
If I had to choose a location that captures so many of the things I love about Portland, Cathedral Park would be high on the list. Located beneath the iconic St. Johns Bridge, this area offers an incredible mix of architectural interest, river views, towering trees, open grassy spaces, and even a small beach along the Willamette River.
Within a relatively small area we can photograph beneath the bridge, explore tree-lined pathways, let kids run and play in open grassy fields, and head down to the riverfront for a completely different look. Every time I visit, the light, river, and landscape feel different, which helps make each session one of a kind (and there’s always a surprise of what we’ll find on the beach).
The St. Johns Bridge is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, and it creates a beautiful backdrop while still leaving plenty of room for kids to move, explore, and simply enjoy being together.
Great Fit For
Families who want an iconic Portland backdrop
Families with active kids
Families bringing their dog
Families who enjoy exploring outdoors
Families looking for a mix of urban and natural elements

The iconic St. Johns Bridge
River and beach access
Large open grassy areas
Beautiful trees and Pacific Northwest scenery

Rebecca's Take
If you're having trouble deciding between an urban location and a nature location, Cathedral Park is often my answer. It gives us a little bit of everything and consistently creates some of the most varied and dynamic galleries of any location in Portland.
Cathedral Park (Location guide linked here) isn’t the only location where we can incorporate Portland's beautiful bridges into your photos. If you're drawn to bridge views and riverfront scenery, be sure to check out my guide to Portland Photo Locations With Bridges for additional ideas.

George Rogers Park
Located in Lake Oswego, George Rogers Park is one of my favorite locations for families with young children. There are many different natural backdrops within a relatively small area…making it easy to create a unique photo gallery while keeping the experience fun and engaging for kids (and adults too). My girls and I love to come here when we need a break from the busyness of downtown Portland, but don’t have the time to head to the coast.
One of the things I love most about George Rogers Park is that there is always something to discover. During a single session we can incorporate open grassy fields, architectural stone structures, a bridge, forested pathways, a creek, and even access to the Willamette River. The variety keeps kids interested and naturally encourages exploration, movement, and play throughout the session.
George Rogers Park also has a wonderful Pacific Northwest feel. With evergreen trees, water, natural textures, and beautiful seasonal color, it provides a backdrop that feels timeless and connected to the beauty of the Portland area.

Rebecca's Take
If you have kids who love to explore the outdoors, George Rogers Park is hard to beat. Between the bridge, creek, trails, riverfront, and open spaces, there is always something to discover. It's one of those locations where the session often feels more like a family adventure than a photo session.

Cathedral Park & St. Johns Bridge (for river access and variety)
Hoyt Arboretum (for a more forested experience)
Cooper Mountain Nature Park (for outdoor exploration and natural scenery)
Hoyt Arboretum
Hoyt Arboretum is one of my family's favorite places to explore in Portland because it’s close to our home, and we can easily become immersed in exploring a true PNW landscape…and it's also one of my favorite locations for family photo sessions. Located within Washington Park, it offers beautiful forest scenery, a variety of tree species, and easy access to some of the most iconic Pacific Northwest landscapes in the city.
One of the reasons I recommend Hoyt Arboretum so often is its versatility. The location in NW Portland works beautifully in every season and offers a variety of looks without requiring a long hike into the forest. Within a relatively short walk we can find towering evergreens, colorful fall leaves, bamboo, flowering plants in spring, and beautiful pathways that create a timeless backdrop for family photos.
Another thing I love about Hoyt Arboretum is how flexible it can be. The tall trees provide natural shade and help filter the light, making it one of the few locations I regularly recommend for families who may not be available closer to sunrise or sunset. Whether we're photographing a young family, grandparents and extended family, or a family with teens and dogs, Hoyt Arboretum is a location that works well for almost everyone.
Great Fit For
Families who love nature
Families wanting a classic Pacific Northwest look

Families looking for a year-round location
Why Families Love It
Beautiful Pacific Northwest forest scenery
Gorgeous in every season

Cooper Mountain Nature Park
Located in Beaverton, Cooper Mountain Nature Park offers a very different feel from many of the other locations in this guide. Instead of dense forests or urban backdrops, you'll find open spaces, rolling hills, beautiful views, and some of my favorite evening light in the Portland metro area.
At Cooper Mountain Nature Park, the trails wind through a mix of prairie, oak woodland, and forest, creating a variety of backdrops while still feeling peaceful and connected to nature. The elevated viewpoints overlooking the valley add a sense of openness that can be difficult to find closer to the city.
Cooper Mountain is especially beautiful in late summer and fall when the grasses turn golden and the evening light creates a warm glow across the landscape. It feels distinctly Oregon and is a wonderful choice for families who enjoy spending time outdoors and don't mind a little walking in exchange for beautiful scenery.

Rebecca's Take
When families tell me they love open spaces, views, and beautiful evening light, Cooper Mountain is often one of the first locations that comes to mind. It feels a little more like an Oregon nature adventure and a little less like a neighborhood park, which makes it especially fun for families who enjoy exploring together.

Lewis & Clark College
Nestled in southwest Portland near Lake Oswego, Lewis & Clark College is one of Portland's hidden gems for family photo sessions. With beautiful architecture, tree-lined pathways, seasonal foliage, and open campus spaces, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and visual interest.
During a single session we can take photos among beautiful trees and gardens, explore historic campus architecture, incorporate stone stairways and archways, and even enjoy views of Mt. Hood on a clear day. The combination of natural and architectural elements creates a gallery that feels both timeless and distinctive.
Lewis & Clark is especially beautiful during the spring and fall when flowers and seasonal foliage add extra color throughout campus. The warm tones of the buildings, combined with the greenery and open spaces, create a setting that feels elegant while still remaining relaxed and approachable.

In-Home Family Photo Sessions
Sometimes the most meaningful location isn't a park, a bridge, or an urban Portland neighborhood. Sometimes it's your home.
In-home family photo sessions allow us to document your family in the place where so much of life actually happens. The couch where you read books together. The kitchen where you make pancakes on Saturday mornings. The backyard where your kids spend summer afternoons. These everyday spaces often hold many of the memories we want to remember most.
One of the things I love about in-home sessions is how personal they feel. No two homes are exactly alike, which means no two sessions are exactly alike either. Your photos become a reflection of your family's routines, personalities, favorite activities, and this unique season of life.
Home sessions are also incredibly convenient. There's no need to pack everyone into the car, worry about the weather, or wonder whether your toddler (or teen tbh) will cooperate in a new environment. Instead, we can focus on connection, play, and the little moments that make your family yours. As a parent, I know how quickly homes change too. Bedrooms get repainted, artwork comes down, and one day the house that feels ordinary right now becomes part of your family's history.
Great Fit For
Families with babies and young children
Families who want a meaningful backdrop
Families including pets (particularly those who can’t go to a location)
Families who love documenting everyday moments
Families who prefer a relaxed experience
Families wanting photos that feel uniquely theirs
Why Families Love It
Comfortable and familiar environment
Completely weather-proof
Perfect for babies, toddlers, and pets
Highly personal and unique
Easy to incorporate favorite activities
Tells the story of this season of life
Rebecca's Take
As much as I love exploring Portland with families, there is something so unique about photographing people in the place they call home. Years from now, your kids may not remember every park or photo location, but they'll remember the house where they grew up, the bedroom walls, the kitchen table, and the everyday moments that made up their childhood…and photos will help them to do that.

Beyond Portland: Oregon Coast Family Photo Sessions
Oregon Coast Family Photo Sessions
While most of the locations in this guide are within the Portland metro area, many families choose to turn one of their annual family photo sessions into a day trip or mini adventure along the Oregon Coast.
The Oregon coast offers dramatic scenery, wide sandy beaches, sea stacks, forests, and beautiful sunsets that create a completely different feel from an urban Portland session. Whether you're visiting Cannon Beach, Pacific City, Neskowin Beach, or another favorite coastal town, the Oregon Coast can be a wonderful option for families who love the outdoors and want a truly unique backdrop. I have a personal obsession with Cape Kiwanda and Neskowin Beach due to the haystacks, rocks, and iconic Oregon Coast landscapes where we’ve spent countless hours together.
Great Fit For
Families who love the beach
Families looking for an adventure
Annual family photo traditions
Families visiting Oregon
Families wanting a more dramatic landscape
Why Families Love It
Favorite Annual Vacation Spot
Kids can roam free and explore
Families have many coast memories, and want to capture everyone together

Rebecca's Take
The Oregon Coast has always been one of my favorite places in the Pacific Northwest. There is something special about spending time together by the ocean, and many families turn their photo session into a full day of exploring, playing on the beach, and making memories together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Portland Family Photo Locations
-
This is probably the question I get asked most often, and the answer may surprise you: there isn't one "best" location.
The best location is the one that feels most like your family.
Some families love colorful urban neighborhoods like the Pearl District or Slabtown. Others feel most at home surrounded by trees at Hoyt Arboretum or exploring the riverfront at George Rogers Park. Some families want an iconic Portland backdrop like the St. Johns Bridge, while others want to document everyday life right at home.
The good news is that Portland offers an incredible variety of locations, and there are usually several great options for every family. Part of my job is helping you narrow those choices down to find the location that feels like the best fit for your family, and the experience you'd like to have.
-
For families with young children, I generally recommend locations that provide safe room to move, explore, and simply be kids.
George Rogers Park is often one of my first recommendations because there are trails, bridges, grassy areas, and river access that naturally encourage curiosity and play. Cathedral Park is another great option, with open spaces and plenty to explore. For families who prefer a quieter nature setting, Hoyt Arboretum can also be a wonderful choice. Your home is also a great option for young children because it is safe, familiar, and you don’t need to pack any extras for the session.
That said, every child is different. Some children thrive in wide open spaces, while others enjoy the excitement of an urban location. We'll talk about your children, their personalities, and what tends to bring out their best smiles before selecting a location.
-
Neither option is better, they simply create a different feel.
Urban locations like the Pearl District, Slabtown, Eastbank Esplanade, and Portland's street art areas tend to create colorful, modern, and energetic images. They often work especially well for families who enjoy exploring the city or have older children and teens.
Natural locations like Hoyt Arboretum, George Rogers Park, Cooper Mountain, and Cathedral Park highlight the beauty of the Pacific Northwest with trees, water, open space, and seasonal color.
If you're unsure, don't worry. Many families aren't immediately drawn to one style or the other, and I'm happy to help you decide which environment best reflects your family.
-
One of the realities of living in Portland is that rain can happen during almost any season.
The good news is that cloudy days often create beautiful soft light for photography, so a little overcast weather is rarely a problem. If conditions become too wet, windy, or uncomfortable for your family, we'll simply reschedule your session.
If it’s rainy, another option is an in-home family photo session. Sessions at your home are completely weather-proof and can be a wonderful way to document this season of life in a setting that already holds so many memories.
-
Absolutely! Dogs are family too.
Many of my favorite locations are dog-friendly, including Cathedral Park, George Rogers Park, Hoyt Arboretum, and several urban locations throughout Portland. If including your dog is important to you, we'll simply choose a location that allows pets and provides enough space for everyone to feel comfortable.
If you have cats or other pets that don't enjoy traveling, an in-home family photo session is often the easiest and most relaxed way to include them in your photos.
-
The easiest answer is: you don't have to figure it out alone.
When helping families select a location, I usually start by learning a little more about your family. What do you enjoy doing together? Do you spend weekends hiking or exploring city neighborhoods? Do you have young children who love to run, or teenagers who would prefer something a little more modern and relaxed?
We'll also consider practical factors such as accessibility, travel time, pets, season, and the overall feel you'd like your photos to have.
There are a lot of beautiful places for family photos in Portland, and there is rarely just one right answer. My goal is to help you find a location that feels authentic to your family and creates an experience you'll genuinely enjoy.
Ready to Plan Your Family Photo Session?
Every family is different, which is one of the things I love most about family photography. And every location provides a unique experience and adventure for your family.
The location you choose becomes part of your family's story. Years from now, your children may remember the bridge they explored, the trail they ran down, the mural they laughed in front of, or the home where they spent their childhood. My goal is to help you select a location that feels authentic to your family while creating an experience that is relaxed, fun, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the options, don't worry. You don't need to figure it all out on your own. I'll guide you through the entire planning process, from selecting the right location to choosing outfits, preparing your kids, and making sure your session feels like your family.
I'd love to help you create family photos that feel natural, meaningful, and uniquely yours.
