Is Newborn Photography Safe?

Updated March 2026

When I became a new parent, I suddenly found myself asking one question over and over:

Is ‘this’ (fill in the blank) safe for my baby?

So if you're wondering, “Is newborn photography safe?” That is not only a normal question, it’s wise.

As parents, you absolutely have the right to ask your newborn photographer about:

  • Their experience with infants

  • Their training

  • Their safety practices

  • What happens if someone is sick

  • How they handle newborns during a session

Short Answer? Yes — newborn photography is safe when done thoughtfully, responsibly, and with experience.

Like many things involving newborns, safety depends on the photographer’s training, approach, and judgment. When sessions are baby-led, hygiene is prioritized, and positioning is handled with care, newborn photography can be a calm and very safe experience.

Below, I’ll walk you through exactly how I approach safety during my in-home lifestyle newborn photography sessions in the Portland, Oregon metro area.

*Nothing shared here is medical advice, just my personal experience and professional approach to newborn photography.

My Medical & Professional Background

Before becoming a full-time photographer, I worked for over 10 years as a pediatric nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner. (You can read more about me and my specific medical background HERE).

During that time, I cared for babies of all ages, including brand new newborns. That training gives me both:

  • A deep understanding of infant physiology

  • A calm, confident presence around babies and new parents

I also maintain current CPR and First Aid certifications for infants, children, and adults.

While I sincerely hope those skills are never needed during a photography session, I want families to know that background is there.

For many Portland families, that added layer of medical experience brings peace of mind.

Health & Hygiene Practices

When I arrive at your home for your newborn photography session, the first thing I do (after saying hello!) is wash my hands thoroughly.

Hand washing remains one of the most effective ways to prevent illness, especially around newborns whose immune systems are still developing.

I also:

  • Reschedule or arrange coverage if I or anyone in my household is ill

  • Ask families to communicate if anyone in their home is sick

  • Stay current on recommended adult vaccinations

Your baby’s health always comes first.

What Happens If Someone Is Sick?

If I am ever unwell near your scheduled session date, I will:

  1. Contact you immediately

  2. Offer to reschedule

  3. Or arrange for a trusted, experienced newborn photographer colleague to step in

I never photograph newborns if there is any risk of exposing them to illness.

What Is a Baby-Led Newborn Photo Session?

As a lifestyle newborn photographer in Portland, I approach every session as baby-led.

That means your baby’s comfort and wellbeing guide everything we do.

Unlike heavily posed studio newborn photography that may require advanced positioning or composite editing, my lifestyle approach keeps baby naturally supported, typically in a parent’s arms or on a stable surface, with an adult always within reach.

Here’s what “baby-led” looks like in real life:

  • We follow your baby’s cues.

  • We pause for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing.

  • We never force poses or positions.

  • If baby is happiest in your arms, that’s exactly where we’ll create beautiful images.

  • If baby needs movement or extra snuggles, we slow down.

Because sessions take place in your home, often on the primary bed, in the nursery, or near natural window light, a parent is always nearby. There is no scenario where baby is placed somewhere unsupported or unattended.

I intentionally build extra time into every newborn photo session so nothing feels rushed. The experience is calm, gentle, and centered around safety first, beautiful images second.

And the wonderful thing? When babies feel secure, the photos are even better.

Safety with Siblings & Pets

Including siblings and pets is one of my favorite parts of lifestyle newborn photography, but always with safety in mind.

For siblings:

For pets:

  • One parent holds baby.

  • One parent manages the pet.

  • We create space and calm energy before taking photos.

Safety first. Beautiful moments second. (And usually, we get both.)

Questions to Ask Any Newborn Photographer

If you're researching newborn photographers in Portland, here are a few helpful questions to ask:

  • What training do you have working with newborns?

  • Are you CPR/First Aid certified?

  • What happens if you are sick?

  • How do you approach posing and handling?

  • Is a parent always within reach?

The right photographer should welcome those questions.

Newborn photography is safe when your photographer prioritizes your baby’s wellbeing above getting “the shot.”

That has always been, and will always be, my first priority.
