How To Dress For Summer Family Photos - Guest Post With ‘The Look Editor’

What to wear for summer family photos

Scheduling a family photo session is such a treat and a fun thing to do!

Deciding what to wear can be overwhelming, but here are some tips for planning your family’s outfits:

Makeup and Accessories

Depending on the time of your session, the sun can be a factor when preparing your family for a summer shoot.

Remember to put sunscreen on everyone, but don’t use a thick white sunscreen that will show up in photos…and look for a sunscreen that won’t leave everyone with a sweaty wet and greasy appearance (I know…it’s a lot to ask right?!).

Keep it simple if you are not used to wearing a lot of makeup. Apply thin layers and choose a matte finishing foundation to prevent any unwanted shininess and so you don't melt during your photoshoot. You may want to consider bringing makeup for touch-ups if this is something you often need during the summer months.

Consider bringing some summer accessories with you like hats, light scarves and sunglasses. These can make great props, help with the summer sun, and also build the summer vibe.

Color, Color, Color!

Narrowing down a color palette is always essential to ensure your family’s style works well with the shoot location. Depending on the background, you can add either add more or fewer prints - although if you are really into it, I recommend solid colors. In terms of patterns I think that one or two fine patterns within your families outfits is great, layered with solids etc.

If you are at the beach, you can keep it coastal with a lot of blues, whites, beiges and a pop of red tones here and there.

If you are at a park, earthy, jewel tones always make a nice contrast to the green background. It’s recommended to mix some whites in as well as contrast for the greens (we do have SO much green here in Portland).

If you are shooting in the city, I prefer deeper colors that will pop against the various urban colors.

Fabrics

Linen, Cotton, and natural fabrics are much better for summer because they let your skin breathe. On the other hand, they can absorb sweat. If you are prone to sweating I recommend wearing a sleeved undershirt to avoid stains.

For Guys

This Summer is a great time for ease of outfit selection, including khaki shorts in earthy and blue tones, and Henley t-shirts or short sleeve button downs. You just want to ensure that you can lift up and hug your kids without your shirt raising above your waist line.

Don't look naked!

I highly recommend tops or dresses with thicker straps or sleeves for all family members during your photoshoot day! These will frame your body better against the background, and you won't have to worry about looking naked in any pictures - especially the portraits.

These photos don't need to be a fashion statement, but choosing a more interesting neckline or a slight puff sleeve can help. Avoid spaghetti strap dresses or even strapless tops.

Midi and long dresses also allow you to move around without too much hassle. When you sit on the grass or have a playful moment with your kids, that's the best way to go. The length in the dresses will ensure you are modest while moving around, and provide tons of visual interest in your photos too.

I am sure you'll have a great time and will receive wonderful pictures to look back on, so don't overthink it. If you need a hand, feel free to contact Camila to schedule a styling appointment.
