The Best Portland Family Photo Ideas For Winter

Do you think that the winter is a time when you can’t have your family photos done? Well, thin again! We have tons of great options here in the Pacific Northwest for winter family photos.

Embrace the Snow

Here in Portland we don’t always have snow on the ground in winter, but we have a few fun options for fun snow filled photos. One option is to head up to Mt. Hood and have your family session there in the snow. Another option is to plan a tentative session for the next snowfall. I love photographing my own girls just outside our home having fun when it snows here in Portland. Typically the snow is fluffy and heavy in the trees making a great backdrop, and bonus, kids are always smiling and having fun in the snow.

Plan an Activity

We can explore the urban areas where we can quickly duck into a cafe if needed to warm up. The urban neighborhoods and buildings are lovely in the winter, and provide a fun backdrop for family photos. We can also plan an activity, like visiting a library or art museum where we can have fun exploring indoors and out for your photos. Some of the forested parks with tall evergreen trees are also lovely backdrops for winter family photos. Everyone can layer up with sweaters, scarves, and hats for that cozy winter forest vibe.

Holding your family photo session at your home is an excellent idea in the winter months. If you do it before Hanukkah or Christmas we can also get images that include some of your holiday traditions in the backdrop. After the winter holidays, your home is a great place to snuggle up on a couch or chair close to a window for fun connected images. We can also plan an activity at your home like reading together, playing a game, building a puzzle , or baking cookies which are all fun indoor family activities.
