How to prepare for your maternity session by pampering yourself

As new and experienced parents we spend a lot of time taking care of our partners and children.

But, during our pregnancies it’s so important that we take care of ourselves.

When you’ve honored your new growing baby by scheduling a maternity photo session, it’s a great excuse to treat yourself to some pampering that will also improve the overall experience and look of your photos.

How To Prepare For Your Maternity Photo Session By Pampering Yourself

Get A Manicure + Pedicure

Taking a little bit of time to treat ourselves during pregnancy is so important for our mental health…and honestly can you even reach your feet anymore? I definitely reached a point when I could no longer reach my toes! Not only is getting a mani/pedi relaxing, and a great treat, it also will have a positive impact on your photos. I often take photos of hands, particularly hugging your baby bump, or holding onto the hand of your toddler or soon to be older sibling. Also, if your maternity session takes place at your home, I’ll request that you not wear shoes or socks. If it’s summer and we’re outside wearing sandals, then your toes will definitely be photographed in some of the images.

Think About A Relaxing Prenatal Massage

If you are feeling a little bit nervous about having your photos taken, then why not get a relaxing prenatal massage? Definitely take the time to find a practitioner trained in prenatal massage, but it’s an activity that I highly recommend, and one of my favorite ways to relax and relieve back and hip pain when I was pregnant.

Treat Yourself To a Facial

Getting a facial is a great way to relax, but i would recommend that you give yourself at least a week between your facial and photo session, just in case of any breakouts. It seems like when i get a facial I’ll have a breakout after about 50% of the time.

Collaborate With a Styling Service

If choosing your outfit for your maternity session sounds like a challenge, take this opportunity to work with a stylist, like The Look Editor to help select the best colors for your skin tone, and to choose the best outfit for your body. For maternity sessions, I prefer bump hugging outfits, but also want YOU to feel your best, and comfortable in the outfit that you select.

Take This Opportunity To Freshen Up Your Hairstyle

Are you planning to get your hair cut and potentially colored before the baby arrives? Doing so shortly before your photo session is a great way to feel ready for baby and to impact your photos too!

Drink Plenty Of Water

Be sure to drink plenty of water leading up to your session. This will help your skin to have a healthy glow, and to give you more energy.

Eat a Healthy Meal and Snack

Nothing is worse than trying to function when hungry, and this is definitely the case when expecting. I recommend having a good healthy meal and even a light snack right before your session so you have lots of energy, and a twinkle in your eye.
