Where should your session be? Tips on Photo Shoot Location Selection

Are you ever stumped about where to have your family photo session?

Portland Oregon offers so many great opportunities, and often the answer is easier than we think. This expanded photo session started off at the families home, where we first explored each of the kids bedrooms. By starting there they could each show me their true personality, as well as items they love in their rooms. This helps the kids to become comfortable with me, and the photography process. They’ll see that I aim to have fun and not force posed images.

The images of the kids together here are so fun and natural! Nothing beats jumping on the bed together!

Next we explored the families living room. They have created such a beautiful home, that I wanted to include it in the images as much as possible. As often happens in the pacific northwest, it was a cloudy day. So, we took advantages of the window light where we could.

They have such an amazing view to their backyard from the kitchen that includes a great bar area for the kids to read at while their parents prepare meals. I can see that this is a space that they must gravitate to frequently as a family.

Next we headed outside to the families backyard for some outdoor images. I was so surprised to learn that they have swings under their deck!! The kids had a blast showing me how high they swing, and I won’t lie, I loved how much fun they were having and photographed it all!

The spring blossoms were so lovely in the backyard that we wanted to get some portraits of the family, including their dog Lucy. Amazingly, she was totally into participating in the photo session. I think everyone loved having fun in the backyard, which is a great personal location for a photography session.

And nothing is more fun than racing with your brother or sister, right?!?

And, we decided to do a few more portraits with the family dog before heading out to a second location.

The family wanted to incorporate the feeling of the pacific northwest into their images as well. so, we headed to the Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park, which has beautiful natural greenery and trails.

So, if you can’t decide where to have your family photos taken in Portland Oregon, don’t worry!! Your backyard, neighborhood, and or local park are all great options.
