Behind The Frame, Part i

Favorite Photograph’s I’ve Taken, some behind the frame details, and why I love them, part i.

This is a showcase of a few client and personal images I’ve taken over the years, focusing on color, composition, connection, and joy. All of my favorite things!

Yellow Wall Photo

When I found this yellow wall, i was immediately drawn to the large amount of space, and I knew that my daughter had this dress already in her closet that would work perfectly for some unique portraits here. I chose to center her in the frame, and to have lots of the yellow wall surrounding her. I then just chatted with her, and asked her to look in a few different directions etc. This was the final image which was my favorite of the little session.

Red Wall With Movement

When we were traveling once in Hong Kong, we approached this really cool red wall area. I was attracted to all of the different lines, square shapes, and the rich red color. I attempted to take some images of my daughter walking and jumping to freeze movement with her framed…but then, I slowed my shutter speed down, and centered my daughter in the wall area. I had her twirl the umbrella while I held quite still to have a clear background while showing movement in the umbrella, and this was the final image.

Young Girl On Swing

During an at home family session I was exploring the backyard of my client’s home, and the kids showed me this swing hanging from their deck. One of the motivations for this family session was that the daughter was missing her front teeth. I’d already photographed a variety of different portraits of her around their home, and in their room. But, once the kids were on the swings we had a blast. I stood as close as I could to them while they swung higher and higher. This lead to crazy laughter, and tons of movement from the wind in their hair. Even thought you can’t see the full swing you know that the girl is swinging and having a blast, and her toothless grin is highlighted amongst all the joy.

Girl Hugging Mom

This image was actually the very last frame I photographed during this family session. We had explored a few different areas of a popular local park (Cathedral Park) and taken many images highlighting the fall leaves and the large bridge in the background. Just as we were wrapping up the mom was hugging the younger daughter and wrapping her in her coat. I took this image from slightly above the young subject, and there’s just something about the warm embrace, and her eye contact to the viewer that just draws me in every time.

I plan to make this a regular series here on the blog so I’d love to hear your questions
& thoughts below in the comments!
