What type of images to expect from your newborn session

The newborn period is such a special time, and one that goes by at a snail’s pace while you are in the thick of it, but is over and you have a six month old baby before you know it.

Having newborn photographs helps to make memories of this unique time

By planning to have newborn photos at your home, you are creating a beautiful time capsule to treasure and look back on as you grow as a parent, and as your little newborn becomes a toddler and child. They will also love sitting with you and looking back at memories of a time when they were new to the world, and to your home.

What type of images can you expect from your newborn session?

Each newborn session is a little bit different, based on the temperament of the baby, if they have older siblings, if you have grandparents or other caregivers at the home to be included in photographs, if you have pets, and the style and rooms available for taking photos. Regardless of those differences, you can expect the following images in your newborn photo gallery.

Baby Alone

During each session I will photograph your newborn alone if they tolerate being laid down. This can occur on the parent’s big bed, on a living room couch, and /or on a decorative carpet or blanket. I will often take images of the baby swaddled and lying on their back, and then will turn them on their side or tummy for some photos if they are ok with those positions. Some babies need to be held during their session, which is why I follow ‘baby led posing’ techniques, and will then take their newborn portraits while they are held in their parents arms.

Baby With Siblings

This is often one of the first images that we will take if baby is happy and older siblings are on board. How these images are done depends on the energy level and age of the older siblings, and how the newborn is doing. If you have an older calm sibling who can hold the baby, then we’ll try to take their photos this way. I’ve also done portraits with the sibling looking into the crib or bassinet where the newborn is sleeping, or the children laying closely together on a bed or even on the floor and will photograph them from overhead. There are many options that we can use to best match your home, and children to capture sweet images of the new siblings together.

Baby With Parents Together

I always take images of your newborn baby with both parents. This is done in a variety of styles, and based on available light and windows we’ll take images where you are interacting with each-other and baby (lifestyle newborn photos) as well as a few more posed portraits to have for grandparents, and to have for documentary purposes.

Baby With Parents Individually

I will also take individual images of the newborn with each caregiver who is present at your home. This includes parents and any grandparents, etc. who are there to help during this new transition for your family. Newborns are happiest when held and this makes taking these portraits a breeze during your session.

Full Family Portraits

A priority for all families is a new and updated family portrait with each member of the family. We’ll do these in an area where everyone can relax and focus on connecting with the new baby, typically on the couch, by the front door, or on the parents bed. You will have a variety of full family portraits in your newborn gallery when it is delivered.

Baby In Crib or Bassinet (if available)

Crib’s and bassinet’s provide a unique opportunity for creative images that include lines, framing, and unique perspectives. They also show the size and scale of your little newborn within their new home. If you don’t have a crib or nursery set up for them, no worries. We’ll have many opportunities for creative images.

Nursery Details + Newborn In Nursery

I often hear from parents that the nursery is the first room that they designed in their home, or is the only room that they’ve taken the time to really decorate. If this is the case, I’ll be sure to capture images of the details as well as you and the baby in the nursery space.

Close up of Feet, hands, and bellybutton

Those little newborn details that change so quickly are always on my list to capture with photographs, including their tiny feet in your hands, their fingers wrapped around a parents, and their wrinkly belly button or back rolls. Throughout the session I’ll capture these tiny little details and they will be spread throughout your gallery and can then be used creatively in your photo albums and wall art to tell the story of your newborn’s first few days at home.
