Why Photographers Use Watermarks (And Why It Matters)
If you’ve ever opened an online gallery (or even done an image search online) and seen watermarks across the images, you might have wondered why they’re there.
You’re excited. You love the photos. You want to text one to grandma immediately.
So why the watermark?
This is one of the most common questions I receive from family portrait clients and school portrait families, and the answer is actually simple.
Watermarks are not about mistrust.
They’re about protecting creative work and sustaining small businesses.
Let me explain.
What Is A Watermark?
Before I go into why photographers utilize watermarks, lets quickly review what a watermark really is.
The origin of a ‘watermark’ came from paper manufacturers who would add a mark with water that you could see when holding the paper up to light, to show who produced the paper itself…a type of trademark.
They were also used to date and authenticate historical documents, artwork, and books. This evolved over time to what we often see today, which are digital watermarks on images. You can see a watermark on the below image.
Who Owns the Photos?
When you hire a professional photographer, you’re investing in both the experience of having the portraits taken, as well as the final digital images and printed photos/wall art.
Just like with music, books, or artwork, the creator (in this instance the photographer) retains copyright to the work they produce. When you purchase a photo collection, you’re purchasing the rights to use those images for personal use: printing, sharing, enjoying in your home.
This is standard across the creative industry.
It allows artists to:
Maintain control over their work
Protect their brand
Sustain their livelihood
And continue doing the work they love for families and schools like yours.
Why Watermarks Are Used in Proofing Galleries
Watermarks typically appear on proofing galleries, images that are available for viewing and selection before purchase.
They serve a few important purposes:
Protect images that haven’t been purchased yet
Prevent low-resolution screenshots from being shared or printed
Ensure the final images shared online and printed represent the quality of the finished artwork
Protect the income that supports a small, local business
A screenshot of a proof image is low resolution and often cropped or distorted. It doesn’t reflect the true color, clarity, and detail of the final file.
Watermarks help make sure that what gets shared publicly reflects the care and quality that went into creating it.
About Screenshotting
I understand the temptation to take a screenshot of images from your gallery…you’re excited and you want to share those photos right away.
But screenshotting images from a proofing gallery bypasses the purchasing process that supports small creative businesses.
Photography is not just a quick click of a button. It includes:
Planning
Equipment investment
Editing time
Insurance and licensing
Ongoing business costs
Years of training and experience
When images are screenshot instead of purchased, it directly impacts a photographer’s ability to continue offering professional services.
Once a digital image collection is selected and purchased, you’ll receive high-resolution, watermark-free images that are ready to print and share beautifully.
That’s the version worth sharing.
A Note About AI Watermark Removal Tools
With new AI tools becoming more accessible, some people have discovered ways to remove watermarks from images.
I want to gently but clearly say: using AI (or any software) to remove a watermark from an image you haven’t purchased is not okay.
It violates copyright law and removes the protective layer intentionally placed on that image. More importantly, it undermines the trust and integrity between families and small businesses.
Watermarks exist for a reason. Removing them without permission is the same as using artwork without purchasing it…or walking out of Target without paying for your items.
I believe most families simply don’t realize the impact, which is why education is important.
Supporting Small Creative Businesses
When you purchase your images as presented by the photographer, you’re not just buying a file.
You’re supporting:
A small, local business
A creative career
Continued service to your school community
The ability to document milestones year after year
Photography captures moments that never happen again…first days of school, growing families, missing teeth, newborn snuggles, senior year smiles.
Protecting that work allows photographers to keep showing up for those moments.
If You’re Ever Unsure
If you have questions about image use, downloads, or sharing, please ask your photographer.
I’m always happy to clarify how galleries work and help you find the best way to share your images once they’re purchased.
My goal is always the same:
To create beautiful photographs for your family, and to run a sustainable, ethical business that can continue serving this community for years to come.
Thank you for supporting professional photography and the artists behind it.
