From Newborn to One Year: An In-Home Family Photography Story

A First Year, Told at Home

There’s something really special about photographing a family more than once, especially during the first year of after adding a child to your family.

These two sessions were not just about documenting a newborn or a milestone.

They were about returning to the same home, one year later, and seeing how life had unfolded in between as their daughter grew.

The same spaces.
The same family.
A completely different season of life.

It was such a treat to revisit their home after one year to see not only how their little one had grown, but also how their family home had evolved with her addition.

The Newborn Session (6 Weeks at Home)

When I first arrived for their newborn session, their baby was about six weeks old, still in that early stage where everything feels new and a little bit tender.

We kept things simple.

The nursery where so much time was being spent.
The living room where they gathered together….and enjoyed their Christmas tree.
Quiet moments giving a bottle, reading a book, rocking in the nursery.

Since it was the holiday season we were able to include the tree and their decorations in some photos, which also change and evolve as a family grows.

In-home newborn sessions are never about perfection.

They’re about:

  • Holding your baby close

  • Settling into a new rhythm

  • Documenting the real beginning of your family’s next chapter

And those early weeks? They go by so quickly.

I remember how warm and peaceful their home was as well as how they had such beautiful photos displayed throughout their home.

Why In-Home Sessions Matter

One of the things I love most about in-home photography is that your space becomes part of the story.

It’s not just a backdrop, it’s context.

  • The couch where you rock your baby

  • The hallway where little feet will eventually run

  • The kitchen where everyday life happens

  • The crib that will eventually change to a bed.

These details may feel ordinary now, but over time, they become some of the most meaningful parts of your images.

Returning One Year Later

Coming back a year later felt both familiar and completely new.

The same rooms were there, but with little changes.

That tiny newborn was now:

  • Standing

  • Cruising

  • Smiling and laughing

  • Full of personality and curiosity

The nursery looked different….although very similar.
The rhythm of the home felt different…less quiet for the baby and a bit more lively.
The connection between everyone had deepened in a way you can’t stage or recreate.

It was also fun to see some of the photos from our first session displayed throughout their home, and in their beautiful colorful stairway.

And that’s what made this session so meaningful.

Seeing how their lives had grown and changed while staying sweetly the same.

The Power of Documenting the First Year

The first year of a child’s life holds so much change.

And while milestone sessions are beautiful on their own, there is something incredibly powerful about seeing them together.

Newborn → One Year
Stillness → Movement
Holding → Exploring

When sessions happen in the same space, that transformation becomes even more tangible.

Where a Christmas tree was replaced with a ball pit and book shelves, and a curious toddler can look out at her neighborhood with such excitement.

Where you once rocked and fed your baby a bottle, you now cuddle together to read books. It was so warm and cozy to be together with this family observing their love, and how they spend time together.

What These Photos Really Capture

These images aren’t just about how things looked.

They capture:

  • How it felt to hold your baby in those early days

  • How your home supported your family’s growth

  • How quickly everything changed, even when it felt slow at the time

And most importantly—they give you something to return to.

I know that these images from the one year session will grace their walls with the same honor and joy as the newborn images.

Thinking About Your Own Family Photos

If you’ve ever thought about documenting your family at home, this is your reminder that there is no “perfect time.”

Your home, exactly as it is right now, is worth remembering.

Whether you’re welcoming a new baby or celebrating a first birthday, in-home sessions allow us to capture your family in a way that feels:

  • Personal

  • Comfortable

  • Meaningful

  • Completely your own

If you are in the middle of a phase right now that feels chaotic, remember (speaking as a mom of two teens) that time really does fly by, and having these tangible moments beautifully captured to treasure for years is a true gift.

You don’t need a perfectly styled home.
You don’t need everything to feel “put together.”

All you need is your family, in the place you call home.
