What To Wear: What your newborn needs for their lifestyle photo session

What is lifestyle photography when it relates to newborn photography? Well, lifestyle newborn photography are images created showing natural arrangements of a family within their home, and holding their newborn baby, enjoying time together rather than fully posed studio photography.

Simple White Onesie

When selecting colors to wear for your newborn photo session, a white onesie is always recommended to start with, and one that fits the baby well. If the onesie is too big it won’t be flattering in the photos. This allows us to capture photos of all of the details of your little one, hands, feet, hair, cute baby size, and draws all of the focus to the baby rather than their outfit. Colors such as light pink, grey, light aqua, cream and grey are all great alternatives and will ensure that there aren’t any harsh skin color casts which can be created from bright orange, hot pink or neon green on the baby and you while holding your little one.

And, here are some neutral onesies with modern and subtle color:

Swaddle Blanket

Newborn babies love to be held and wrapped up tight and warm. So, a neutral swaddle blanket is a perfect item to have on hand for your newborn photo session. If you have a favorite color for the nursery, or a sentimental swaddle blanket, we can incorporate that item as well.

Here are some great swaddle blanket options, including some from a local baby store Posh Baby:

Knotted Gown

There are many solid modern newborn baby gowns and the knotted style has a unique look and modern design. Choosing a solid color or grey gown can be a lovely contrast to the white onesie from the start of the session.

Other Unique or Heirloom Items

Hats and headbands are very cute items that can be used in your photo session, but are definitely not required. I prefer to keep the focus on the newborn and your growing family. So, I would recommend that any hats or headbands are neutral and know that we will use them for part of the session but not all.

If you have special heirloom items, like a blanket or a decorative rug, I love to include those in some special images during your session. Just be sure to set them aside ahead of time and let me know at the start of the session so they can be included.

A very unique and modern option is a personalized swaddle blanket with your newborns name, and they even have coordinating newborn gowns!
