One of the benefits to having your newborn session at home is that you have pretty easy access to all of the things, food, drinks, outfits, etc. And, being prepared for your photo session can decrease any stress that you may be feeling about having a photographer at your home.

So, I wanted to share some items to have on hand for your newborn session

Extra Outfits

When selecting outfits for you, your partner, newborn, and any siblings, it’s always a great idea to prepare a backup option. What we all quickly learn with newborns is that spit up, nursing leaks, and diaper accidents can happen at inopportune moments. By pre-selecting a few backup clothing options you can rest easy that you can quickly change into something that will work with all of your families outfits as well. An Activity To do With Older Siblings

When you also have siblings at home, depending on their age it is a good idea to brainstorm a safe and quiet activity that they can do along side you while you nurse the baby, and also to do during photos. One activity that I love to photograph are families reading books together. This can be even more unique when it’s a book about becoming a big brother / big sister or a photo album from when they were born.

Reading together or looking at photos can be a great activity for older children as well.

Clean Snacks/Beverages

I always want to have happy and satisfied clients during their photo sessions…and this means that you may need to take a break for a snack or drink - for you, your partner, newborn nursing/bottle, and kid snacks!! The main thing to remember is its best to have a non-colored beverage and a snack that’s not too messy to avoid spills and crumbs on clothes.

Special Items

If you have any special items that you’d like included in your session, please be sure to get them prepared and set aside before the start of your session. This way, we can look at them as soon as I arrive to ensure that we make a plan to include them, and don’t forget. Some special items I’ve included in photos are a special hat, hand knit baby blanket, personalized onesie, first stuffed animal, etc. Don’t sweat it if you don’t have something to include, I just mention this as with newborn induced sleep deprivation comes forgetfulness, and I want to ensure we capture all photos you are hoping for from your session. I included a rug in my now 12 year olds newborn photos, and I love how they turned out!
